Surgical division

Alcon offers the most comprehensive product portfolio in the industry, enabling surgeons to achieve the best results for their patients. Their surgical portfolio includes technologies and devices specializing in cataract, retina, refraction and the Advanced Technology Intraocular Lens (ATIOL), as well as cataract and refraction problems such as presbyopia and astigmatism. 1945
Pharmacists Robert Alexander and William Conner open a small pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas, which they call Alcon, a combination of their initials.
1950
Alcon introduces its first two ophthalmic products: Ophthalzin™ for minor eye infections and Zincfrin® for red, irritated eyes.
1953
During a partner visit to West Texas, Robert Alexander, with the help of a local doctor, develops and patents the DROPTAINER® eye drop dispenser, which is still common in the field of ophthalmology.
1969
The surgical division of Alcon is established with 7 employees.
1989
Alcon acquires CooperVision to become the world‘s largest eye surgery company.
1990
Introduction of Focus®, the first soft daily contact lens.
2003
Alcon introduces SYSTANE® eye drops for the treatment of dry eye symptoms.
2005
Alcon introduces the AcrySof® ReSTOR® artificial lens, which soon becomes the leader of the world‘s multifocal artificial lens market, offering the widest range of eye care and ophthalmology products.
2008
CIBA Vision introduces AIR OPTIX® for Astigmatism, AIR OPTIX® AQUA and DAILIES® AquaComfort Plus® contact lenses.

Alcon introduces its CONSTELLATION® Vision System for vitreoretinal surgery.
2011
Alcon introduces the world‘s first and only hydrogradient daily wear contact lens, DAILIES TOTAL1®.
2013
Alcon introduces the VERION™ Reference Unit and the VERION™ Digital Marker, which provide more accurate and efficient results during cataract surgery.
2014
Alcon expands its DAILIES® AquaComfort Plus® contact lens product line with the introduction of multifocal lenses.

Alcon introduces AIR OPTIX® COLORS, a monthly wear eye color enhancing contact lens produced with silicone hydrogel technology, available in 9 natural-looking colors.
2014
Alcon signs deal with Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences) to patent smart lens technology.

Alcon acquires WaveTec Vision, the first commercial intraoperative aberrometer system designed for cataract surgery.
2015
The Alcon Experience Center, an ophthalmic education and training center, opens at the company‘s headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.
2016
Introducing the NGENUITY® 3D Visualization System, which helps better visual representation of retinal surgeries.
2016
Introduction of two new innovative contact lenses: DAILIES TOTAL 1® Multifocal, the first and only hydrogradient lens for presbyopia sufferers, and AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde, which combines SmartShield® technology with HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix to prevent build-up of deposits and maintain the surface moisture content of the lens for a long time.
2016
Alcon enters into strategic agreement with PowerVision Inc. to develop liquid-based adaptive lenses.
